New School Block!

Kota Kinabalu: The Education Ministry should consider rewarding Mission and Chinese independent schools, in particular, for progressively taking in more bumiputera students in Sabah.

"The racial composition in Sabah is very much different from West Malaysia and thus, the Mission and independent Chinese schools in Sabah that are enrolling many bumiputera students should be rewarded," said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

"In fact, I did suggest that such schools after achieving certain enrolment of bumiputera students be considered for financial assistance from the Government.

"After all, these schools are always run by their independent Board of Trustees and benefit everybody irrespective of race, culture and religious beliefs," he said.

Masidi, who is also minister-in-charge of education matters in the State, said this after opening the new three-storey building of SRS Datuk Simon Fung at Kingfisher Park, Thursday.

The new RM3.4 million block of the private primary school was built to replace its 13-year-old wooden block and to cater to the increasing demand of parents wanting to enrol their children in the school.

Previously, the old block could only accommodate up to 450 pupils but now the new block can house 600.

Also present were the school's headmistress Datin Amy-Jean Yee, the school's Board of Trustee Chairman Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu, Rev Datuk John Lee and Chairman of the Building Committee of St Simon Education Complex, John Paujik.

Hmmm... I wonder which school is that...

What's the point of having a beautiful state-of-the-art school if it's not at all safe.
A school should be another safe haven, away from school, not a place to be raped!

S'pore girl, 11, raped: Appeal thrown out
KOTA KINABALU: The High Court has dismissed the appeal of a former teacher who was convicted on two counts of raping an 11-year-old Singaporean student inside a science laboratory of a private school last year, according to a report on a Malaysian website.
Adrian Simon, 32, was sentenced to 18 years' jail each on the two charges and given four strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court on Nov 10 last year.
High Court judge Abdul Rahman Sebli held that the trial judge made no error and the guilty verdict was fully supported by evidence, reported Free Malaysia Today website on Friday.
But Justice Abdul Rahman also dismissed the prosecution's appeal for the 18 years' jail sentence for each charge to run consecutively.
In dismissing the appeal, he said the Sessions Court judge could not have arrived at any other verdict after accepting the evidence of the complainant who was described as a 'thoroughly credible witness'.
He also said the sentence was neither grossly excessive nor grossly inadequate.
'There can be no argument that the offence is serious, compounded by the fact that the respondent was placed in a position of trust in relation to the victim.
'The victim was only 11 years at the material time and the respondent was 20 years older,' he said, adding that it was clear that Simon had taken advantage of the girl under his care.
Simon, who taught science and mathematics but has since been sacked, was charged with raping the girl twice in a science laboratory storeroom of the SRS Datuk Simon Fung private primary school between February and March last year.
